Crime is on the rise in Floyd and it is destroying the county’s illusion as a safe haven.
Break-ins this week at Dollar General and Subway add to the rash of burglaries of local businesses in recent weeks.
Lots of theories about who might be behind the sharp increase: kids, drug addicts, newcomers, etc. The string of so many break-ins in such a short time suggests an organized effort.
Floyd County is still a place where many people leave their keys in their cars and their doors unlocked.
That may change.
Unfortunately, crime is a byproduct of growth. As Floyd County grows so will the number of people who think stealing is a way to get money and pay for drugs.
