The inaugural Chance Harman Classic basketball tournament at Floyd County High School didn’t go the Buffaloes’ way Saturday night as the varsity boys fell to Patrick County 56-40.
For coach Brian Harman (left), it was a bittersweet evening. The charity tournament is named for his four-year-old son, who died of cancer last year and while the event served as a memorial to his lost child it also brought another loss to a boys basketball program that has struggled for the past two years and stands at 1 and 10 this year
Also disappointing was the small turnout in the Floyd County High gym Saturday night. Crowds for basketball games have been small this year both for the boys teams and the girls squad, even though the girls’ team appears headed for another state playoff appearance under the guidance of coach Alan Cantrell, who lost his four-year-old grandson to the same rare form of cancer last year too.
Win or lose, the basketball teams deserve more support than they are getting from residents of Floyd County.
