For a few minutes in the start of the second quarter of the state championship game at Salem Municipal Stadium it looked like Floyd County High School’s 13-0 varsity football team was about to stage another of its incredible comebacks.
Down 21-0 to a dominating Gretna team at the half, the Buffaloes opened the second half with an impressive march downfield for a touchdown. It was 21-7 and the Buffaloes seemed to have gained the momentum they needed.
Then Gretna moved down easily for another score and it was 28-7. A few minutes later, 35-7.
Floyd didn’t give up, mounting two impressive drives in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 35-20 (the kicker missed an extra point on the last touchdown).
But Floyd ran out of time and the game ended at 35-20, ending the team’s unbeaten streak and their hopes for a state championship.
Still, the team has no reason to feel ashamed. A 13-1 record and runnerup state champions is pretty good.
Congratulations to the team for a great season.
You should all be very proud of yourselves for the fantastic season. You played with heart, determination, and tenacity. You and the coaches have made the entire county proud!
Rock on, BUFFALOES!
P.S. Great work by the BAND and CHEERLEADERS, too!
