With reports of snowfall accumulations in Floyd County ranging from 10-14 inches overnight from the first big snowfall of the season, those who ventured out Thursday morning found drifted snow, covered roads and slick conditions just about everywhere.

While the sleet and freezing rain that complicated the storm in areas east of the New River and Roanoke Valleys, the heavy volume of snow and temperatures hovering around 20 Thursday morning made conditions difficult and both the Virginia State Police and Department of Transportation urged motorists who did not have to venture out to stay home and off the roads.

Floyd County schools closed Thursday and with more snow forecast during the day the system will probably remain closed on Friday.

Our advice?  Stay home, stay warm.
