Family memories streamed from the stage of the Floyd Radio Show Saturday night from Mountain Thunder, a bluegrass band with strong family roots in traditional music.
Thunder traces its roots to the legendary McPeak Brothers of Wytheville, a group often classified as a “progressive” bluegrass band but it was also one that stayed true to its roots.
One of those brothers, guitarist and singer Mike McPeak, now joins his mandolin-playing son Adam on stage as part of the core of Mountain Thunder and they delivered a healthy dose of traditional music during the hour-long radio show Saturday night and closed out the evening with a concert afterwards.
Joining the McPeaks is banjo picker Steve Chrisley and his son David on bass, along with fiddle player and singer Nikki Wright.
My late mother, born Ethel McPeak from Meadows of Dan, counted the McPeak brothers among her cousins, so it was a family night in more ways than one and it was a privilege to photograph and film the performance.
Wow, Doug, that connection is way cool…
