Lots of comments last night at the public hearing on the Floyd County budget for the coming fiscal year.
Emails this morning asked “where is the public hearing story?”
Can’t write it yet. I cover the Floyd County Board of Supervisors for BHMedia, the Warren Buffett media company that owns The Floyd Press and they have first dibs on what comes out of that meeting.
A full story, with photos, will be in Thursday’s Floyd Press and a video look at the meeting will be here on Blue Ridge Muse.
In many ways, Tuesday night’s hearing was an exercise in futility for those who want more money for the county school system. Supervisors last month decided to keep tax rates the same and, although a final budget is not yet passed, funding levels for county agencies including the school system, are set and Virginia law prohibits the county from raising tax rates once they are set.
With property reassessments and virtually certain higher taxes coming next year, the county is heading into a time when emotions and anger will certainly increase. Uncertainly and gridlock in Richmond adds to the contentious atmosphere.
More details and video on Thursday.
