The sad faces say it all at game’s end

Hopes for a repeat state championship by the Floyd County High School Lady Buffaloes softball team fell short Friday afternoon in a lopsided loss to King William in the semi-finals in Salem.

The Lady Buffs uncharacteristically committed multiple errors and their bats went silent for most of the game until a last-inning rally that scored two runs but left the team at the wrong end of a 12-2 loss.  Those last-inning runs narrowly averted a 12-0 shutout.

Christine Phillips hit three batters with wayward pitches with one driving in another run while a walk brought in another. Ashley Gallimore, brought in to relieve Phillips in the fourth inning hit three more batters , gave up more runs off a double and a three-run homer. Wayward throws in attempts to pick off runners went wild and allowed more runs to score.

It was an atypical game by a team that normally excels at the pitching mound and the plate and the loss eliminated the team from the state playoffs that are scheduled to end Saturday with the title game at Radford University.

Yet, even with the loss, the Lady Buffs made it to the final four in the state title race.  In the end, however, the team lost two games: The regional final and the state semi-final.
