Bob FitzSimmonds: Another Republican racist?

The Virginia Republican treasurer with a passion for bigotry and insults resigned from his position Wednesday but refused to apologize for his racist remarks.

“It seems that no matter how careful I might be, I will periodically give consideration for others to portray the party in a bad light, as long as I am a party official,” said Bob FitzSimmonds.  “After discussion with several party leaders it seems clear that I will either need to stop posting on social media or step down from my party office.”

Virginia GOP chairman Pat Mullins and vice chairman Michael E. Thomas called on FitzSimmonds to resign after he questioned the patriotism of Muslim Americans and said they had not made any positive contributions to America.

“Exactly what part of our nation’s fabric was woven by Muslims,” FitzSimmonds wrote.  “What about Sikhs, Animists and Jainists?  Should we be thanking them too?”

FitzSimmonds posted his remarks following President Barack Obama’s recognition of the end of Ramadan and praised Muslims in building “the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.”

FitzSimmonds has pissed off GOP leaders before. In February of this year he called Fairfax County Republican Del. Barbara Comstock “a twat” and later deleted the comment on Facebook.

Such inappropriate comments are not uncommon among the GOP:

Sadly, similar insults have appeared in recent year. Included twice defeated Senate candidate George Allen along with more than one staff members of his campaign and still other officials of state and local Republican officials.

Racism, it appears, rules the Virginia GOP.
