As the defense tries to find a way to absolve former scandal-ridden governor Bob McDonnell of exchanging favors for loans, cash and gifts from a high-rolling dietary supplement wheeler-deeler, a federal agent documents shows the governor and his wife pulled down more than $177,000 in largese from the scheme.
Jonnie R. Williams Sr. provided some $70,000 in loans and more than $100,000 in gifts, cash, trips and spending sprees that included a Rolex watch, catering for the couple’s daughter’s wedding and more.
Now the defense claims it can show that while the McDonnells took the money they didn’t provide any favors or paybacks in exchange for all the obvious bribes.
A hard sell? That depends on whether or not the jurors buy into the former governor’s claims that he didn’t break any laws that cashing in on his job.
