Lance Terpenny, the long-haired, bearded Harley Davidson-riding part-time town manager who came to Floyd after Christiansburg sacked him four years ago, is leaving the job at the end of the year.

Terpenny left Christiansburg after a messy fight with the town council there following 14 years as town manager and seven before that as assistant.

As town manager in Virginia’s largest incorporated town, Terpenny drove development of the town’s vast aquatic center.

Shortly after joining Floyd, one of the smallest incorporated towns with a manager, he asked the town council to reduce his job fto part-tme, saying his position did not require a full-time manager.

During his tenure, the Floyd Town Council fired longtime clerk Karen Hodges.

Terpenny told the town Thursday night during the town council meeting he would be leaving on December 31, 2014

Terpenny called Floyd a “unique town” and praised the council and town citizens.  He often commuted from his home in Christiansburg to Floyd on one of his custom Harleys.
