After losing the 2A West Conference final over the weekend, Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes used a rain delay and an insurance run to protect the lead and take the quarterfinal match of regional play Tuesday to knock Dan River out of the playoffs and advance to the semi-finals.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the first inning with five walks but the Buffaloes added a second run in the third inning when Amanda Whitlow bunted safely and scored on a single from pitcher Ashley Gallimore. Then Holly Britt drove in Mary Phillips to give the Lady Buffs a 3-2 lead before rain set in an delayed the game until Tuesday with Riley Underwood grounding out but Gallimore scoring from third.
Dan River blanked Floyd on hits in the final innings but the 4-2 lead held with only two Wildcats getting hits but not scoring.
Floyd now faces Gate City in the Region 2A West Semi-Final in Danville at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
