Severe weather may be the primary activity on most people’s mind this weekend as Floyd and surrounding areas are still trying to recover from the severe storm and flooding on Tuesday and more of the same is possible, starting Friday evening.
Floyd County and surrounding areas head into an uncertain weekend from a weather standpoint.
While Hurricane Joaquin may continue to veer to the north and east and could miss Virginia altogether, heavy rains already forecast for the area could being 5 inches or more and predictions of wind create a threat of toppling trees with damage and power problems.
Floyd County will open an emergency management shelter at Station 1 of the Rescue Squad at 452 Floyd Highway North. The annual Arts & Crafts Festival scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the high school is cancelled and Dogtown Roadhouse cancelled musical events for Friday and Saturday. Other event venues are watching the forecasts and weather before making final decisions.
Floyd County public schools closed for Friday.
