Mallary Cox: Point leader in Regional win over Martinsville.

Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes, now the undisputed top basketball team in Virginia’s 2A West after beating Martinsviille in the regional final Saturday afternoon at James River High School, heads to Harrisonburg Thursday to play 2A East No. 3 Seed Stuarts Draft in a 6 p.m. quarterfinal at James Madison University.

The Lady Buffaloes dispatched distaff Bulldogs 64-51 with precision shooting, including 10 three-point shots, a 17-point high by Mallary Cox, 14 from Abi Belshan and 12 each from Michaela Thompson and Elizabeth Quesenberry.

Odds are that the Lady Buffaloes could meet Martinsville yet again in the state semi-finals in Harrisonburg if the Bulldogs dispatch George Mason in the quarterfinals later Thursday night.

Floyd lost to Martinsville twice in the regular season but came from an 11-point deficit with a 13-point sprint to win the Conference Championship and recovered from a three-point deficit in the first quarter to take the lead by the end of the first half and hold it for the Regional win.

Elizabeth Quesenberry: 12 points with half from three-pointers.
