The Community Market: Attracting events and visitors

The Floyd Country Store closes out a 10 day celebration of its 100th anniversary today with the Sunday afternoon Oldtime Slow Jam, a weekly gathering of musicians who play and sing in a circle in front of the stage from 2 p.m.

Guitarist and legendary luthier Wayne Henderson and country piano virtuoso Jeff Little appeared on stage Saturday night and the store debuted a Saturday afternoon “America” music series earlier in the day with Bernie Coveney, Chris Luster and Rob Neukirch. Store owner Woody Crenshaw says the Saturday music series will showcase music “beyond bluegrass.”

It’s been a long busy week for Floyd, starting a week ago Saturday with the Second Annual Town Jubilee and the beginning of the Store’s anniversary celebrations.  The Friday artisans market and the Saturday farmer’s market are growing the new Community Market Structure.

On Friday night, a medical supply salesman from Waynesboro settled into a chair outside the Country Store and watched the activity on the street.

“I’ve driving through Floyd dozens of times on my way to sales calls,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve stopped here for the night.  It won’t be my last.
