Amy and I arrived at Mickey G’s Italian Bistro and Pizzera shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday. The hostess seated us right away at one of two open tables and a waitress arrived to take our drink orders within a minute.
After browsing the expansive Italian menu, we ordered the calamari appetizer. It arrived quickly and the lightly-breaded squid was cooked to perfection — not rubbery like too many offerings of the dish.
Amy ordered Chicken Parmesan and I opted for the lasagna, The ample main course overflowed the plates. A line for available tables began forming at 6 p.m. and overflowed onto the porch by 6:30 p.m.
For someone who’s been on a diet for the past year, the ample portion of lasagna, which followed the calamari, left me stuffed and ready for a nap.
Owner Michael Gucciardo stopped by our table and said business has been better than expected.
“We’ve been slammed,” he said. “I’ve added four additional staff since we opened last week.”
Bernie Coveney arrived shortly after six to celebrate his lady friend’s birthday. They joined us at our table, freeing up a reserved table for some of the waiting diners.
It turned into a very enjoyable evening, spent with good friends at a fantastic addition to the local restaurant scene. The bill for two main courses, an appetizer and beverages was $35 — very reasonable for high-quality Italian food. The restaurant is small, and it fills up quickly. The dining area on the front porch will allow more seating when the weather warms up. If you pick the right time, you can get a seat quickly or you can opt for carry out. Those who have sampled the pizzas tell me they are very good. So are the sandwiches. I tried a sausage and peppers sub there earlier in the week and it was delicious.
Ran into Jeff Walker on the way out. He and his party had been waiting for a bit over 30 minutes.
“We’re in no hurry,” Walker said. “We know it will be worth the wait.”
